The tension mounts (a house divided)

So, now that I am back from my morning walk with my friend Sheila, I am going to explain to those of you unfamiliar with certain aspects of British culture, why tomorrow will be a tense day in the Bertie-Gail household.

It's all because of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Scotland are playing England for a place in the quarter finals at 8:30 am, our time.

Now of course, being a typical Scot, my sporting interest revolves around a passionate desire to see England beaten. By absolutely anyone, anywhere, any time. But especially of course by Scotland.

Well, as you all know, the English are arrogant, smug, over-bearing, uptight, need I go on?

The tricky thing is that Gail is actually English. So long as she keeps her mouth shut, I can pretend otherwise. After all, she is pale-skinned and a bit freckly, not that arrogant, and the longer she stays in Aberdeen the more moths fly out on the rare occasions she opens her purse to buy me a treat... She fits in quite well here. But then she gives it all away the minute she calls out "Buh-tie", not "Bearrr-tie" when I am running around in the park. The shame.

And you know what REALLY GETS MY GOAT!!!

To hear Gail going round saying, in those oh so patronising English tones, things like "well I do like to see the Scotland team do well, on the whole, even though I basically support England".

Grrrrhhh. Can you hear me gnashing my teeth?

So Saturday morning could turn into a right stramash. Forget about being nice to the convalescent.

PS From Gail:
Q: How do you spot a well-balanced Scotsman/dog?
A: They'll have a chip on both shoulders.

  9. Oh Bertie, you should be happy that Gail gives you treats at all with that attitude! BOL

Be nice to Gail Bertie, most of us girls don't really give two hoots about man games anyway.

  11. That's our New Zealand joke. We're playing the Kiwis....so we understand the England/Scotland thing.

    XXXOOO Daisy, Kendra & Bella

Bertie, maybe you should go stay with Angus and Wilf for the game.

  12. Oh Bertie we understand totally. As Daisy, Kendra and Bella said its the same with Aussies and New Zealand. May the best team win Bertie(go Scotland). Gail, that joke was hilarious (go England). Sorry, we have to be fence sitters on this occasion. Don't want to offend anyone hehehe. No worries, and love, Stella and Rory

  13. Hi Bertie,

It is all a bit confusing. My mum will be watching the game live and cheering for Scotland. She said something about supporting the "underdog" (is that because Golden Retrievers come from Scotland) even though she actually has English ancestors (amongst other nationalities including some countries in the RWC she won't mention out loud!). She considers herself a Kiwi which is why we usually support the team in black.

    Enjoy the game,

    Woofs,
    Riley

  14. Good luck to both of you, and may both teams play the best game of their lives. Hope it's an exciting game that goes down to a last minute field goal - or whatever the rugby equivalent is.

  17. One can certainly get exercised over the sporting events. Do try to keep things civilized.

BTW - What's up with you being stuck at camp even when your Gail was home from belly button camp? Seems a bit unjust.

  18. LOL! Now I'm really confused...so Gail is a traitor, and who does Bertie support?
Kinda confusing...My new thing...perhaps I'll simply support New Zealand, in the absence of South Africa, of course
    Choices! Choices!

  19. Oh Bertie, I really want you to eat with us. How about you make shift your own personalized taco. It can be anything like maybe a folded over piece of bread, pieces of crackers, cereal with topings on it, or maybe just meat with some cheese, whatever you have round your house. Just put your food either in it or on top of it. Tacos can be chicken beef, fish or even your kibble cuz some dogs dont eat people food. You are terrior, I know how creative you are, so I can wait to see your own personalized taco. That will count fur sure ok?

  20. Oh Bertie, looks like you might have some grovelling to do now... Not that I want to rub it in or anything. You looked good posing in front of the heather earlier. Poor Gail, I do hope you has managed to restrain your lap bouncing for a bit!

  21. We have got REALLY into this Rugby World Cup.

I am sort of sorry that England beat you....but we were cheering for England. But you were cheated out of beating Argentina the weekend before.

But next weekend is going to be SO exciting.

We were cheering on Ireland this morning (because the MOTH is a bit Irish). We will cheer them on next weekend against the Welsh too (sorry George The Lad).

Sorry to run it in about the English heatwave too. I think it will all be over soon.

The Girl Of The House and her boyfriend are up at Loch Ness today. He's been running in the Loch Ness Marathon for the NSPCC.

    Love and licks, Winnie
