A visit to the Queen's Well

You just take a sip of spring water in the middle of nowhere and someone rushes along and builds a memorial to commemorate the occasion.

Well that's what happened to Queen Victoria when she ventured up Glen Mark, at the head of Glen Esk, in 1861.

Last week, approximately one hundred and fifty years later, I followed in her footsteps, along with Gail and her friends Kate and Henry.

This is the 'Queen's Well'. Quite an impressive little structure isn't it?

But to be frank, the water looked slimey, so we wandered further up the glen...

...in search of the perfect picnic spot.

I think we found it - don't you?

So Gail, when are they going to come along a build a memorial so that future generations know that I lunched right here?

I wonder if my friend Wilf is aware that the whole area is called the Glens of Angus?

(And I'm telling you, you can't go anywhere in this part of Scotland without finding some sign saying that Queen Victoria got here first. It's a wonder she ever had time to be monarch. Well I guess if you reign for sixty years you get bored of hanging around sat on the throne in Buckingham Palace with some heavy bit of metal on your head...)

PS from Gail: history buffs please be tolerant with Bertie and remember science is his speciality.

  1. Bertie - Wilf knows the area well. He used to go for a pint ( with Angus ) at a hotel that Queen Victoria and Prince Albert once visited in Fettercairn .

  2. What a grand looking day! Almost....as we said...almost makes up for the Newfoundland trip without you.

We think George Washington did the same thing. Only he seemed to sleep everywhere....

  3. hey Bertie,

What a beautiful monument, and all for a sip of water! Thank you for sharing that fun bit of history!

The spot you found is gorgeous! Does the water and weather ever get warm enough to swim there? The waterfall is awesome! You have a great nose for picking out lovely spots. So I definitely think they should build a spectacular monument to you! I would visit it! :->

  9. I think they should add a little stone dog bowl at the side of the well to commemorate your visit

  12. You could maybe have your gramps or someone who can do wood working make a few tablets that say Bertie was Here, and just park them about wherever you stop. Some folks, like me, who know you would say, well, this is nice and then others would say "Bertie who???"

Happy to provide a solution for you.

    Kisses,

    Stella

  13. Remember those "Kilroy was here!"signs? "Bertie was here!" sounds so much nicer!

Beautiful spots you get to visit. Not like our flat flat flatlands.

  16. Bertie, I think it's a fine idea to name a glen after you so future doggies can know you took a wade in the water there, maybe a sun nap on a boulder. It seems a lovely place for a picnic and a nice place to visit again. :)
