Lampard?

Lampard in his prime
It may have escaped your notice that the winner of the Terrier group at Crufts this year was a Skye Terrier (of quite extraordinary appearance) who goes by the faintly improbable name of 'Lampard'.

UK based readers will immediately and correctly have guessed that 'Lampard' is so named out of admiration for the well known Chelsea and England footballer Frank Lampard.

It set me to wondering. If you were to be called after a sporting hero, whom would you chose?

Berti Vogts in his prime...
I would like to take this opportunity to make it quite clear, most emphatically, that there is no connection between my name and that of Berti Vogts, the World Cup winning 1970s German football player who later had an unsuccessful stint as the Scotland team manager.

Gail has still, over two years later, not quite recovered from being stopped in the park by a local ned who, on learning my name, said "Bearrrr-tie? Yer didnae name him efta tha' sh*t Sco'land manager did Yer?"

  1. I do love the term "Ned" - it was new to me when I moved back here 3 years ago. You could have spelled your name to prove the difference Bertie but then again I'm guessing that he wouldn't have been able to reach the 6th letter as it would be past his threshold. I don't know any sportsmen called Boris... only Russian and British politicians.

We know nothing about sports here but mom new immediately you were named after her favorite literary character BWW as his handkerchiefs would say. She started reading the jeeves and wooster stories when she was about 8 years old. She and dad are always making Jeeves and Wooster references

  5. LOL! We agree he deserved a nip on the ankles for saying that. I am named after Moll Flanders. Why? Stupid peeps and Pip is named after Great Expectations. Sad she pretends she is learned.
    Have a wonderful Wednesday.
    Best wishes Molly

You are 10 times more handsome and quicker on your feet than the other Bertie!!

Oh dear friend if you only knew the names Mom tried to name me...thank goodness my dad is sensible!! She wanted to name me after my first vet, (Dr.) Clancy. Dad told her that name only reminded him of a street policeman and Never ever would he think of it for a sweet 3 lb. kitty.

  11. Hello Bertie!
Haha, Frankie's comment is very true, and funny!
I don't know who I would be named after, but definitely NOT a footballer.
What about that long jumper, Philip Idowu or something like that? His name can be shortened to Pip, (like in Great Expectations) and then I can add on an extra "p" and "a", and hey presto! You have Pippa!
I think I would be a brilliant long jumper aswell! Hmmm, maybe not.
    Pippa :)

  12. Hey Bearrrtie:

One thing to be said is that you Scots folks have a colorful language. Is Ned a policeman? Like a Bobbie? I realized you folks didn't get your speech from the Queen's English once I read Bobbie Burns poems. I need to have them translated. Ah well, we can all get along, I suppose.

  13. Oh Prof. Bertie! How grateful I am for the education re Neds. It was kind of you to look up Neds on Wiki for me and I must thank you for it! If anyone else would like to know it is this:"Ned is a derogatory term applied in Scotland to hooligans, louts or petty criminals,[1][2]". My guess was a copper, so I was off a little!

    Cheers,
    Jo
