Bertie spots a spalted beech

Well I just had to take a closer look when I saw this recently felled trunk of a beech tree in Hazlehead Park the other day.

Apparently the dark lines are caused by fungus, and the effect is known as 'spalting'.

Pretty, isn't it? Let's see close up.
Happy Nature Friday friends! On this particular date I am especially thankful to Arty, Jakey and Rosy for their wonderful blog hop celebrating the beauties of our natural world. For otherwise my post today might have been totally filled with photos of Gail and me looking sad and miserable as we mourn the UK's misguided departure from the European Union...

Bertie, this is a much preferable subject for your post, over the wickedness...errr... sadness in the political field today. The spalting is one of Ma Nature's glorious offerings and Gail has captured it gawjussly!!! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  3. Yes, we are feeling pretty bereft too, Bertie, and wonder what the future holds for everyone. At first my human thought the close up photo was a map of the EU without the UK!

  4. We hope a furniture maker gets the tree. Mom can see a gorgeous table top in its future.

  5. That is beautiful wood that someone would be lucky to acquire for some wood working project. We're sad for you that your country is leaving the EU.

  7. Oh my WFT I have never heard of splating. What beautiful art Mother Nature has created. At first I thought someone drew on it with a magic marker. I hope your spirits will be better soon.

  8. Spalting….never heard the term, though probably saw the result and never knew what it was. Almost looks like a cave painting--done by an inept artist.
