Older and wiser?

We are all growing older, I fear.

Yesterday afternoon Gail took me for a walk round Durris Forest. It's been a long time since we were last there - over four years, I'd say.

Apparently on that previous occasion I chased a deer into the dark depths of the conifer plantation. Gail claims I "shot off like a bullet"  and did not come back when called. She says she spent ages looking for me, and was really worried 'cos it was winter and it would soon be dark and ours was the only vehicle in the car park.

[I have to say, this is not how I remember it at all. Not for the first time, I find myself wondering if my owner suffers from false memory syndrome.]

What is true, I admit, is that when I was a young pup I was firmly convinced I could chase down even the biggest of stags, if only given the chance.

These days I am older and wiser, and am aware that my dreams of deer-hunting were a tad unrealistic given the discrepancy in leg length. In retrospect, it was all a bit of a waste of time and energy, wasn't it?

So anyway, Gail has decided to reinstate Durris Forest on our list of nice places for a weekend walk, hence the outing yesterday.

Our favoured route is circuit of just over seven miles.

It seemed shorter four years ago. And it was easier in those days to bounce into the car at the end of the walk too...

  1. Well....we think you could catch a stag, but then, what do you do with them. Gail wouldn't let you put it in the car. Much nicer to walk and enjoy the view.

  2. That looks like a really super walk Bertie, and such a lovely day.
I have trouble getting onto the back seat of the car, too - it was much easier when we had just two big front doors which opened wide. Currently we're looking at SUV's with low tailgates so that I can jump into the back easily. We do have a dog ramp, but it's not much use in small spaces and most Spanish parking bays are very narrow. On a short journey, like the one down to the beach, I sit on the floor of the front seat, but I can't see where we're going !

    1. It's much more fun to see where you're going, isn't it?

  3. tell Gail that Teka says it is much nicer to ride on a lap, like the human who is not driving, or even a back seat lap.

And yes, entering and leaving the car is not as easy as it once was. For all of us.

Oh Bertie lad, I hear ya... the mind and the heart are as able as ever, it's the vehicle they ride in that fails... Glad you got back to Durris though, for it's a grand view indeed. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  5. Bertie - The car was probably a lower model four years ago. Nothing to do with you !

  9. Dear Bertie,

I suspect it is the "wiser" part. I chase bunnies just to the edge of the forest. Who can be bothered chasing more than that? So I completely understand. That does, however, sound like a fabulous walk!

  10. Bertie old chap, I am feeling the age too. My peeps recently got me a special backpack as I get very tired after 2 miles. I love it, had no adjustment issues. When I get tired, I ride for 45 minutes or so, then I'm ready for another mile or so. It's called K9 Sport Sack. You can purchase it direct from them or through web retailers like Amazon or Chewy. It comes in various sizes and they will help you with correct sizing. I love it and give it four paws up, literally!

  11. Running off in search of adventure! Go Bertie!!! My human Uccle had the nerve to suggest to his sister she attach a "Tile" to my collar so she could locate me with her phone. He even sent her one.... as if I'd ever run too far away from her to hear her call of "food"!!

    Sending you lots of woofs,
    Riley.

  13. We all get old Bertie. Have you considered that the problem Gail has with "False Memory Syndrome" may also be age related? Muzzer still swears that I used to dash off at any opportunity, and that I was faster than a speeding bullet, and could leap tall fences in a single bound. That's me. Teka Toy, JRT Super dog!

    HaH!

  14. The car definitely keeps getting higher! I think it's sneaky of Momma to keep raising it like that.

  15. Oh, the tales of terriers and deer...we could go on and on. We are never going to catch those long-legged rose bush eaters, but a terrier never gives up, eh?
