Yes of course Bertie, what's on your mind, I'm listening.
Well it's just that I've noticed you have a new coffee mug, and I want to tell you how much I like it.
Oh Bertie, you mean this one I guess, the one with 'wirehaired fox terrier' written on, and a picture of a fine handsome WFT face?
Yes that's the one.
I get the sense there's more you want to say Bertie?
Yes Gail, there is. You see Gail, I've been living in this house all these months, and everywhere I look it's been Westie this and Westie that. Mugs, wall hangings, stuffed toys, ornaments, cards, fridge magnets, you name it.... Can't you see, it's been a little hard, surrounded by all these Hamish look-a-likes, not to worry just a wee bit that you think I'm second best?
Oh Bertie. Bertie Bertie Bertie. Oh I am so sorry. I had no idea you felt like that. I admit that when Hamish was here, I loved him more than words can say. But now you've come along, and I've found a new and huge and special place in my heart for loving you just as much. As for all those Westie knick-knacks, it's very simple. It seems every other shop in Scotland sells something with a Westie picture on it; they're sort of the national dog. The only reason we don't have a house full of fox terrier stuff is that it's much harder to come by.
So where did you get the new mug from then?
Well Bertie, we're very lucky that Marie-Thérèse lives with us and is so clever at finding nice things on the internet. She gave me the mug as a birthday present last week.
Oh I might have guessed. She is so thoughtful. Where is she? I want to give her another cuddle right now. Just after I've had a sip of your coffee that is.....
PS Gail wants me to point out that I wasn't actually drinking her coffee, it was the 'dog beer' that my friend George sent me a while back. It was totally dee-lish!
Hi Bertie, we just tried to buy some of that dog beer but the shop was sold out!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun idea we thought and clearly you agree.
That is a very smart mug and we are sure that Gail's coffee will taste all the better for being in a WFT mug.
We know how it is Bertie - we are surrounded with Harry, previous basset and also Petra, much loved family GSD!
She, apparently, was a 'real' dog!
This is what our human brothers say and it is hard to compete so we don't bother.
Gail is right, you have your own special place in Gail's heart and indeed in ours.
Hamish will always have his place - thank dogness these humans have big hearts with room for all of us dogs!
We are surprised to have more snow than you - but we can tell you it is snowing again today!!!!
from your currently house bound basset Aunties xxxxx
Darling boy, We love the header picture of you in the snow...WELL clearly you read chapter 4, section 16 of the book...How to wrap your PL around your paw.. Sitting in the chair ON HER LAP AND DRINKING OUT OF ONE OF HER MUGS!!! BRILLLLLLLLIANT! Really we think you are our BEST pupil and so QUICK to catch on.... Plus the mug is truly fantastic.... Would you mind for our next edition ( well really we are CONSTANTLY updating our book because we learn new things to add everyday) If we use this picture for that chapter?Love the A team
ReplyDeleteWhat a great mug. As for dog beer that could cause a serious bout of canine jealousy ! Hope that the worst of the weather has now moved further south. My Scots farmer brothers are threatening to decamp here with their families for Christmas. Brothers and the gannets - it is possible to have too much of a good thing !
ReplyDeleteBertie, our man, we know how you feel. There were a lot of Lab things in our house when we came here, but now Scottie things outnumber them. And we know that Moms can have room for more than one dog in their hearts - we're proof of that.

Oh Bertie, you are such a lucky dog! Gail loves you so much and is a very lucky lady to get to live with you....and I know she knows how lucky she is every day.
ReplyDeleteChristmas hugs to you, Mistaya
Hi Bertie!
ReplyDeleteI like your new mug....and dog beer, Wow, that makes it even better!

What a nice post Bertie. Hamish was special but I bet in time the house will be filled with picture of you. Thank goodness for Marie!! BOL

Yeah, we know what you're talking about, Bertie. When I came here, the whole house was full of Schnauzer this and that. You'd think there wasn't any dog in the world that wasn't a Schanuzer Bowser. Took a while to amass our collection of fox terrier doodads. They are harder to find, but we like a good hunt. Just keep collecting, Bertie!
ReplyDeleteOh, Bertie, it seems every dog might have had to go through what you are going through right now. My Mom had a 16 year old black Scottie whom everyone adored for his fun and playful ways. Therefore my Mom gets a Scottie calendar every year, licorice candies in the shape of a scottie, Scottie mugs and tins, the list goes on. I asked my Mom why not some Border Collie or Labbie things and she is clueless, so we just go on with it. She says not to worry, there is only one special dog here and that is me, Stella. Just like you and Gail!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Stella the Borador!
Hey Bertie...
ReplyDeleteIt seems that both you and your mug are rare finds! Okay...so you are special! Unique! Extraordinary! They say dogs are like their owners...whew,let's extrapolate that... since I am rather a common sort of dog...it doesn't say much about my owner! Ssssssh...don't say a word!

We were most surprised at your mom's reason for not having replaced all the Westie stuff with WFT stuff. We would have guessed Scottish thrift was the true answer.
ReplyDeleteWe know humans can love lots of doggies, some present in the world to hug and love in person and some present only in the human's heart & memories. We figure Gail has the best of both: you to love & hug with her arms and her heart, and Hamish to love & hug with just her heart. It doesn't make you second best, young Bertie. It just means you benefitted from the training your Gail received from Hamish on how to be a better human companion to a truly wonderful doggie.

Bertie. You've captured her heart. It's clear. Laps and shared drinks. Walks and shared conversations. That's what it's really all about. The knick knacks will grow and multiply in number. We're pretty sure of that. But the love in her heart (and yours, too) is gonna grow exponentially. We're positive about that.
