HGY update + interesting fact about Nottingham!

It is very tedious that us pups are not allowed inside hospitals, so I haven't been able to check out for myself how things are with Human Granny.

However, Gail has been visiting every day and tells me that HGY is much better than a week ago and the doctors are thrilled with her progress, although she is still unable to walk.

Yesterday HGY had an MRI scan, which was 'clear'. She is receiving treatment for a suspected infection of the brain - viral encephalitis.

I feel duty bound, in my scientific adviser role, to point out that the technology behind the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) technique was developed here at Nottingham University by physicist Sir Peter Mansfield who, along with the American chemist Paul Lauterbur, won the 2003 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his pioneering work.

I wonder if my readers can name any other famous Nottinghamians (aside, of course, from the Sheriff!)

  1. Bertie, glad to hear that HGY is making good progress. Been thinking about you and Gail, and hoping all was ok. I think dogs would be a welcome distraction in hospital and potentially sped up recovery times. I wonder if there is any science behind that?

  2. How good to hear about the excellent progress of HGY. I'll think of your Bertie when I have an MRI scan next week (nothing major). I think I remember from school that DH Lawrence was a native of Nottingham?

    1. Ten out of ten for literary recall Craig! DH Lawrence attended the same school as my brother but in the 1960s they were still rather embarrassed that a former pupil was responsible for Lady Chatterley's Lover…Cheers, Gail.

    1. JM Barrie was in fact from Eastern Scotland, just south of Aberdeen. We don't know of any Peter Pan / Nottingham connection, but stand to be corrected!

    1. Full marks for Jesse Boot. In fact Boots is why Gail's father and mother came to Nottingham in the first place, and where they met!

  13. Excellent news about HGY! Now, we must deal with the hospital problem. Do the hospitals allow therapy dogs? You would be a shoe in for certification and that might solve getting in to see HGY. Let us know if you need an international reference.
