A misunderstanding about dykes..., it's not what you might be thinking.

When we go for walks along the river near Human Granny's house, much of the time the footpath runs along specially constructed elevated dykes

How generous of the local authorities, I have been thinking, to build such an extensive network of excellent dog walking trails.

One can sprint to one's heart's content,

Or make new friends,

Or simply pose and take in the flat Trent Valley landscape from a conveniently elevated position.

The humans seem to like the dykes too, as the ground underfoot is less squelchy than in the surrounding fields.

So I was all for writing a heartfelt letter of appreciation to Nottinghamshire County Council, on behalf of the local dogs and their owners, when Gail pointed out the error in my thinking.

"Oh Bertie, when will you ever learn? It's not all about you. Those dykes were built as a flood protection measure and not for the convenience of the area's canine population."

Well, I guess we should all be pleased that Human Granny's house is safeguarded against the worst of the East Midlands weather then.

Although I still don't quite get the "not all about you" thing...

  1. I think Gail might be wrong there Bertie, I'm sure it's all about you!
    What a great walkies!

  2. Looks like great, elevated, mud free, walking and lovely photos, Bertie.

  3. I still think you should write your letter!

  4. Well yes indeed Bertie, it is all very much about you. Tut, Tut Gail... and as for the dykes. Lovely photos and much relieved to see none on bikes.

  5. Whatefur, I think dey wuz built for pupses.

  6. At least they built something that is useful ALL the time.

  7. OMD how wrong Bertie........of course it is all about you. We know that. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  8. Hari OM
Such functional beauteousness must surely be for the pleasure of all who walk. Be it two or four-footed!!! The flood stuff is surely incidental...Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  9. I'm with you Bertie, they are made for doggies... and they also are a flood protection when more dogs write their pee-mail there :o)

  10. We are sure they meant it for dogs too. Happy walking.

  11. Dear Bertie: You have been most lax in educating Gail. It is always "all about you" if you are a WFT!

  12. WHAT???? Miss Gail said it is NOT all about YOU??
You need to have a Come to BERTIE session with her... and Set her Straight... It IS all about YOU...
So go ahead and write that nice letter... those folks who Built the dykes... KNEW what was What when they built such Useful thingys... they OBVIOUSLY KNEW that you would be wanting them.

  13. You live in one beautiful place
    Lily & Edward

  14. Now we have to question Gail's understanding on this - how does she KNOW - 100% certain that those dykes were built for more than one reason? We think someone in the planning department probably thought - oh these would keep the water out and provide a great place for people and doggies to walk and one day an amazing little fox terrier by name of Bertie might want to walk across it? Can she say for certain that isn't so?

  15. We don't get it...isn't everything always about us canines??
    Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo

  16. Bertie all I can see is how Springy it looks Im so envious, ugh more snow here its just slush snow sleet. But I agree with Dory it should always be about the dogs

  17. Look at all that sunshine (mostly)!

  18. How we wish we could be there running with you! Why does Gail think everything is not about you? We sure hope she corrects her way of thinking!

    Your Pals,

    Murphy & Stanley

  19. What with that statement.....everything is about us Puppers.....anywho...that is one great place there with so much to explore!

    The Mad Scots

  20. Those are lovely pictures. I know we lie a lot but this is true. My Daddy's last name is Gay. His Aunt married a man whose last name was Dyke. When she named her oldest daughter she used her maiden name as her daughter's middle name so her name was Janice Gay Dyke

  21. Bertie we have had so much rain since last fall...we could use a few dykes here. You surely had a pretty day for your walk!
    Madi your bfff

  22. It's all about you in my mind Bertie!!
