Bertie comes over all Prince Charles

So I decided it was time I had a word with the flowers in Duthie Park.

Really they seem most confused this year.

First of all I spoke to the snowdrops:

"Now look here snowdrops, what on earth are you doing still hanging around these parts?  Don't you know it's nearly the middle of April, way past your wilting time. Fancy having the cheek to still be in bloom. I mean I know you are a delightful sight in January, but now you have most certainly outstayed your welcome. And the fact that it keeps snowing is simply no excuse."

Next I addressed the crocuses:
"Well chaps I realise that if the snowdrops are still with us, then you might be thinking you have every right to stick it out here for a bit longer too. But surely you've noticed that it doesn't get dark now until past eight o'clock at night? There's even enough light for the post-work cricketers to come down to the park for a practice session. You'd get a nasty shock if one of those hard cricket balls bounced on your delicate petals wouldn't you? Time, I respectfully suggest, for you to focus your energies on next year's bulb production."

 Finally, I located some daffodils.
"Jeez, you fellows need to buck up your ideas for sure. You know that the Germans call you Osterglocken? Yes, that's right, 'Easter bells'. And when was Easter? Nearly two weeks ago. And most of you have still not shown your face to the world. I don't think our friends in Deutschland would be too impressed with your punctuality would they? OK so one or two of the more precocious amongst you have finally made an effort to get out of your bed, but it's a poor show all round I must say."

Oh. Gail is telling me that when Prince Charles talks to plants, he probably adopts a less hectoring tone, and perhaps I should consider doing the same, rather than sounding like the recently departed Mrs Thatcher (who had few fans in Scotland).

But really what can you do when Spring is so mixed up with its timing?

  1. Hear hear Bertie! Well said. Rumour has it though we may experience double figures above freezing this weekend.... Above freezing too. I'll withhold judgement until I see it! It's not even that temperature in the new greenhouse with the paraffin heater on!

  2. Our Autumn seems to be on time this year. Don't know what happened to Spring. The flowers just might take umbrage and continue to bloom if you yell at them, Bertie...softly, softly.

  4. That's hilarious Bertie. But shouldn't you having a stern talk with the BBC weather presenters? They're clearly responsible.

  6. Everything has gone all topsy turvy. What next? Those proud flowers will be ever so sorry when they get smushed by the cricketers.

  15. Now Bertie, Mother Nature is the decider in what flowers get to stay how long, so no matter how much you fuss about it, the time and place is well decided by Mum Nature.

    Its the way it is!

    Cheers,
    Stella

  16. Bertie...I think you could have your own show. You just "tell it like it is," and people like that.

  19. What lovely bulbs! Those crocuses DO look lovely with your terrier fur....so talk nice, Bertie.
Sometimes the flowers forget to look at the calendar and they get all mixed up. Don't hold it against them...they are not as smart as us terriers!

  23. Bertie,
I agree with you totally. It is nice to see the flowers, but it would have been even nicer to see them at the RIGHT TIME! It is simply terrible! Rather than giving them Prince Charles talk (even though I, Pippa, do love Prince Charles and support his speaking to flowers and watched him on Countryfile), I think you should have shown them your teeth and ripped them out of the ground! It is the only way for us dogs.
    Enjoy your weekend!
    Pippa :)

  25. Global warming just isn't happening, Bertie....our daffy dillies are up, but it felt like February today with a cold artic wind. You look quite wooly, dear...and ever so handsome. Now, we never thought about yelling er encouraging our plants to get a move on...they are a full month behind....

    Love you dear boy!!
