The park will never be quite the same...

Most days when I go for my walk in Duthie Park I run into the the 'Early Morning Gang'.

This was them on Tuesday morning, when, for once, Gail remembered to bring her camera.
Dogs left to right: Chip, Monty, Milo, Bertie, Rory
I normally stop to greet everybody, and cadge a treat off Rory's affectionate and generous owner, Sheila.

Then, having said my hellos, I race on ahead, 'cos, frankly, they are all a bit slow for me.

Well this morning (Thursday) something seemed wrong.

Rory usually greets me with a gruff, friendly bark. But I couldn't see him anywhere.

Then Sheila came up to Gail and I overheard the following:

"Sorry, I hope you don't mind me asking, but could I possibly have a copy of some of those photos you took of the dogs a couple of days ago?"

"Yes of course, no problem" replied Gail, still not quite getting it.

"You see I lost Rory on Tuesday night. He was very old you know and he suddenly went downhill badly. It was his time to go...."

Sheila was being so brave and stoical, still out walking with her friends.

Here are a couple of the photos that Gail is going to print out and give her.

  3. Oh Bertie, we are sad to read abour your dear friend Rory. We think his human is trying to be very brave on the outside but it is very hard for them.
We are so pleased that Gail had some pictures from your morning walks.
Rory looked like a dear old fellow, we are glad he tolerated your youthful exuberance. That tells us he was a dog with a good heart.
You must give our love to Sheila and make sure you give her extra licks - and not just for the treats.
    Much love

  9. We're so sorry to hear about your friend Rory. He was so fortunate to live with a great lady like Sheila.

We've never heard of an Aberdeen Angus before, but they sure do look a lot like ours - we'd love to think ours were Aberdeens just because we're Scottish and we'd love to have Scottish cows - we might start calling them that anyway. We're thinking about integrating the belted Galloway into our herd.

  10. Bertie, we just read your comment on our blog and we felt we must warn you about swans!
They are very very bad tempered - when you bark at them they spread out their huge wings and hiss most alarmingly!
We urge you, as your Aunties, to never ever bark at a swan!
Your Auntie Martha is learning the hard way........!

  18. hey Bertie,

*sniffle...What a sad story. I am so sorry for the loss of your friend Rory. He sure was a beautiful dog. My heart aches for his owner, Sheila. So very sad, and how amazing she was so stoic about it. I think that is what touched me and my human most; really brought tears to our eyes.

It is wonderful that Gail had her camera and is able to give Sheila some photos. They are very sweet photos, and I am sure it will bring much comfort to Sheila. And I am sure Sheila will also get comfort on her morning walks when you go up to her with your tail wags and love!

  20. We are also so sad to learn of the loss of your friend, Rory. He sounds like a fine old gentleman and we know he will be greatly missed. His human will indeed need lots of surrogate doggie snuggles while she mourns. And we're so glad Gail has some lovely photos as momentos for Sheila.

  24. Oh no! What a sad post.

We're working backwards ... and Moma saw the pictures of Rory as we were scrolling to the top of the post. She said out loud, "What a cool dog! I hope we find out more about him!" We never would have guessed what it was that we would learn.

It's so hard to lose a beloved pet. We know Sheila must be aching something terrible. We're so glad that Gail has the pictures to share with her.

    Sigh.
