A quick visit the Scottish Riviera

Sunshine on the beach at Nairn - rain to the west, as usual

I bet you didn't know that Scotland has a 'Riviera'!  Well in fact it has two seaside areas which lay claim to unusual amounts of sunshine (for Scotland), thus the riviera tag.  One is in Galloway in the southwest of the country, and is the other around the little town of Nairn the northeast.

Last weekend, after a quick trip over to our cottage in the northwest (hope you've got your compass handy today folks!), Gail was all smiles.  Something about 'no burst pipes'.  But Torridon was all horizontal rain, so we headed back east on Sunday morning in search of better walking weather.
Which of course took us to Nairn.  What a smashing place!  You can romp on the beach, and if you get tired of that, there's a fine wood to explore too.

Nairn has a famous resident, Oscar winning film actress Tilda Swinton.  Gail was disappointed we didn't see her.  I wasn't really bothered either way until I learned that this Tilda once ran a film festival in the town, at which entry was free if you brought along a tray of cakes, the audience sat on bean bags or deck chairs, and...

... LOOK AT THIS.... They even allowed dogs in!

  1. All that sun shows off your very tall shadow! Sometimes a romp on the beach and woods is preferable to a bracing walk up mountains.

Next time go for movie night so you won't be abandoned again.

  3. Bertie - You look very much like an ultra cool beach dude ! All these years and Nairn has never shown me its sunny side. Nor come to that has Galloway. Perhaps the East Neuk should be mentioned as a third alternative ?

  5. We didn't know Nairn was known as the Riviera. We must say it does look nice.
That first pic with you looking, if we may, especially handsome! The sun, the sea and the sand - we chose not to look to the west as we really are in need of some of that lovely weather.
We are really pleased you had no burst pipes at Torridon - it is always a worry.
We cannot understand why Tilda wasn't around, did you let her know you were coming Bertie?
We feel sure she would have made the effort to entertain you ......as for the tea and cakes........!
We like the sound of that.

  7. Tilda Swinton is one of my Mom's favorite actors. I never stay awake long enough to watch for her, but I bet she is very good. She also made a movie with George Clooney and maybe thats why he was in Scotland when he picked me up at the airport! Hmmm, what do you say now, little gent?

    Cheers,
    Stella

  9. Those are some very tallllll shadows, Bertie. Your sun must surely be very low in the sky. Wow.

We love your beaches .... you look fabulous. Wouldn't it be fun to romp on them together?

And. We are happy for your Gail that there were no burst pipes. We had some experience with those this holiday ... and it wasn't much fun. Tends to stress the two-leggeds out.

Yearning for calm, imagining yours (as if!)

  10. We wouldn't know Nairn or the Riviera! But you being the well traveled pup, well you just know all those things!

As far as the movies go, no big deal, just another place to catch a good nappie!

  15. Agh, Bertie! So happy you've discovered the joys of the beach! Did you find something disgusting washed up onshore for a good roll? Huge Tilda Swinton fans here, too. Ironic that the Queen from Narnia lives in Nairn!
