Perhaps the truth depends on a walk around the loch*

I have been accused of 'over-sharing' in my previous post, and so shall try to stick to more 'appropriate' literary and philosophical matters today....

Now I've been thinking.

The other day, I overheard Gail saying (inelegantly misquoting Ratty from 'Wind in the Willows') "There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply going for a pleasant walk with your dog and seeing him run around, healthy and joyful".

Yes, I've been thinking, these humans have it lucky don't they? But so many of them don't realise it. They imagine that loads-a-money, fancy cars, designer clothes, high status jobs etc. etc. will make them happy.

When the truth is that all it takes is a well-loved canine pal, some fresh air and a nice place to explore together.

  4. A part of a poem by Jane Kenyon After An Illness Walking the Dog:

Soaked and muddy, the dog drops,
panting and looks up with what amounts to a grin.

Its so good to be uphill with him, nicely winded, and looking down on the pond. A sound commences in my left ear like the sound of the sea in a shell;a downward vertiginous drag comes with it.

Time to head home. I wait until we're nearly out to the main road to put him back on the leash, and he ---the designated optimist---
imagines to the end that he is free. by Jane Kenyon

  5. Yes Bertie, we dogs have it all worked out in months - it takes most humans nearly a lifetime to realise what is important in life.
By then they have wasted so much time!
You are so wise for one so young....!
You look so tall in the first pic - you have grown since we have been away.
That bottom picture is just lovely!

  6. Oh Bertie you look so handsome in both pictures, the first picture is absolutly a beautiful scene! My Mom just loves it!

I don't know who accused you of "over-sharing" but they certainly were full of it!

  8. You are so right, Bertie. And it looks like you have a most beautiful part of the world for doing that walking.

I don't think you should worry too much about over-sharing. Franklin wants me to tell you that he was just getting used to his danglies when one day they were GONE. Happened when he was incarcerated. So, he says you should enjoy the one you have and not worry about the other.

    lotsa licks, Lola

  11. We were pretty sure you are a really smart lad. Now we know if for sure. You said it perfectly, Bertie. And you and Gail model it so well.

What a great example to follow.

    Inspired by your reminder,
    Your pals,
    Jake (and Fergi)

BTW. I was NOT flirting with Katie. And she was only practicing on me. She knows that I am a polite, reserved, a bit shy wirey one, who, it seems, has a true love for kitties. No worries. On the other hand. You've got a GREAT young love in her. She is a doll. (Just as Fergi says is true of her Butchy.)

  12. Bertie what a wise head you have on your square shoulders. And how right you are, there is nothing nicer for our leggeds than time to share and enjoy with us. We are all the riches they need.

In the last sooper dooper photo of you, giving Gail your paw like a good clever boy , why she looks like a millionaire and I bet she was feeling a million dollars too. Just like you were. A'int the simple life grand my boy?

Wiry love dear nephew, Uncle Eric xx

  13. DUCKS! Bertie we prefer to think of our wiggle as more of a Marilyn Munroe sexy kind a wiggle.
We really cannot see how you can possibly think we waddle like ducks!!

  14. Yes Bertie dear, we can see we are giving you conflicting advice.
It is true that one wouldn't want one's nephew referring to you as 'Basset Babes'.
Indeed we think this name was gifted to us by the Army of Four!
At the same time we thought waddling like ducks was not quite us - after all we chased a deer for several hours the other day up at Mugdock.
We may not be able to bounce but we can move when the need arises.
Indeed we jumped across a ditch that our human fell into!!!!
    We rest our case.
As always a complete joy talking with you dear.
