Grumpy human...

Gosh, do you know, before this week I had no idea what an important role I play in maintaining Gail's equable temperament and cheerful disposition.

Whilst I am delighted to report that my wound from last weekend has been healing nicely, this has only been achieved at a price. Gail and I have been trying hard to observe to vet's instructions, which limit me short walks on the lead, with a total ban on running around in the undergrowth, chasing cats, jumping on sofas and all sorts of agreeable activities.

This has been boring but, between you and me, I have been feeling kind of wiped out anyway after all the trauma of the 'incident' with Jake. Worse by far has been the effect of this lack of exercise on Gail.

You see it most in the early mornings. She leaps out of bed, all ready to go for our daily trot round the park, she grabs my lead and if she were a pup her tail would be wagging. But when I remind Gail that we are limited to a gentle stroll down the road and back, her face clouds over and later I notice she is less patient than usual when talking to her very deaf mother on the phone.

So for once I was quite relieved when, early today, I spotted her pumping up her bicycle tyres and oiling the chain. She wheeled the bike out the front door and returned four hours later, hot and sweaty but looking much calmer.

She even shared with me a photo of a not so silly sheep, taken by one of her cycling companions while out on the ride.

And later in the afternoon when Gail phoned Human Granny I heard her repeat "Bertie and I will be arriving in Nottingham on the train, at 6:30 in the evening, a week on Thursday" at least four times without sounding at all irritated.

  1. Hari OM
Ohh hh Train Trip pending!!! Thank heavens for cycles, eh Bertie? Glad to hear of your speedy improvement and am sure it will be just a few days now e'er you're off wandering the longer trails again! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  2. Yes, our peoples do rely on us a lot huh?
I bet you will get lots of fuss from HG.

  3. People cannot handle changes to their routine. Glad she found something to help.

  4. OMD Bertie get that human in check pal a good book and a snuggle with your good self should be be enough. Now for that trip?????? Have a serene and easy Sunday.
    Best wishes Molly

  6. Yes, you have to keep Gail on an even balance. Even if she wants to run and romp don't let her!

    Your Pals,

    Murphy & Stanley

  7. Dear Bertie,

So glad to read that you are on the mend, even if your bouncing ways are on hold for a while. You just need to convince Gail to put a little seat or basket on her bicycle for you so you can enjoy the fresh air too.

May I also take the liberty of suggesting to Gail (from my own human's experience of humans with ears that don't work so well) an old fashioned post card with a "Bertie and I will be arriving on xx date, at xx time. Looking forward to seeing you then" works wonders (as does a text message or email for those who use those methods) so the important information is in writing to be referred to often - not heard incorrectly and misunderstood!

    1. Thanks! The email has already been sent. A postcard as back-up is a good idea, given Human Granny's slightly uncertain handling of electronic communications.

  8. Glad you ENCOURAGED her to take out the bike. We know how grumpy peeps can be when they don't have enough exercise.

So, another train trip in the offing. You'd better keep Gail on the walking string, so she doesn't run off.

  9. Oh Bertie, I was invited to the wedding but just couldn't get away at this time. Stella & I are very happy for George and will look forward to seeing some of the pics of the big event.

Glad to hear you are healing well, try not to be grumpy!

    Jo,Stella and Zkhat

  10. We are so very thankful that you are feeling better Bertie! What a relief. Give Gail a big hugs from us.

Does that sheep really have NO written all over it?

    Lily Belle & Muffin

  11. Yep! Our mom is pretty crabby too when we don't get to walk. Good for Gail for getting the bike out.

    BART, Ruby and Otto

  12. that sheep looks so cute! your human sure needs lots of exercise Bertie. our mom and dad are pretty lazy! Also the oldsters here too are lazy, Tubby is basically a wlak around the block guy now. Weasley however can go forever mom has only ever tired him after a three hour walk which for a pug is some kind of record

  17. BERTIE

  20. Bertie - Nothing like a train ride to accelerate the healing process.

  21. Well Bertie I bet you are getting grumpy also from having your walkies curtailed. Gail should have hooked a tram on the back of the bike and let you ride along.
    Thanks for being a friend
    Sweet William The Scot

  22. We are also so very glad you are on the mend Bertie!

...Make sure you keep pushing your Mama out to exercise, it sounds like something she really needs to you can use the time to do some online shopping or catch up on your TeeVee shows teeheehee.

  23. Glad to hear things are getting a bit better, Bertie! It has been a little rough lately and it's time it get things on track :-)

  24. Great that you feel better Bertie and I'm glad the bike helped your mom to feel relaxed. Is that a NO on the sheep? why sheeps can vote and doggies not? Will you go on a howl-i-day? Maybe you will meet the other fox terrier again in the train?

  25. Glad to read that it seems you are taking fair care of each other. Keep it up, and we'll keep checking in on you. It's important to us that you both heal well.

  26. Glad that things are improving and that Gail had a nice bike ride. Not to sure about that sheep though....
