Going gently...

Gail here again:

Thank you to so many readers for your kind and thoughtful comments on Wednesday's post.

After reviewing Bertie's condition with the vet yesterday afternoon, the sad news is that I've made the achingly difficult decision to have Bertie 'put to sleep' later today.

With his bladder cancer symptoms apparently causing more pain, on top of his deafness, poor eyesight and signs of confusion, he has lost so much of his former vitality and I didn't want to wait for his suffering to get worse.

Bertie has been such a splendid companion over the years, and especially during the long periods of Covid lockdown. I just feel numb right now and can't find the words, but a proper tribute will follow when I'm ready.

Meanwhile, here's a photo of Bertie on a walk in the woods with wee Ella earlier this week, his tail alert and happy, like it always used to be.

  9. Hamish and now Bertie. Hardly seems possible that it's that special time again. For you there is some solace in knowing that this is what trust is all about - that contract between dog and owner that says ' no pain'. You will have an unseen world of dog bloggers with you this afternoon.

  23. Run Free, Bertie!

You lived a wonderful life and have left your pawprint on many hearts.

Your human gave you the greatest gift of all, freedom. Freedom from fear and illness.

Look for a Rough Collie and a couple of Elkhounds. They will show you a good time

  29. Bertie fought long and hard and stayed with you as long as he could. He depended on you to make the right decision when the time came and he let you know when it was time. Take comfort in knowing that you gave him that one final gift of pain-free peace. Gail, I'm so very sorry. I know just how much this hurts right now. Sending you lots of hugs....

  34. We visited so often, but often left without a word, now regretted. Bertie was a lovable boy, running across fields and hillsides and his endless and bouncing-boy-joy will be missed. May he now run with equal joy in the fields of heaven, may you always find love in your memories of him. Bertie, forever.

  36. I didn't know Bertie, but from his picture and description, 'bouncing' sounds like the perfect word for him. The very name brought a smile to my face. I have no doubt that he brought an infinite number to his family. Godspeed, Bertie.

  40. I am feel so sorry to have been away and missed your recent posts. And then to return just as your beloved companion passes away. You are right that small tragedies matter too, despite everything else in the world.
But you know (and of course you do) little Bertie was loved to the end and had a marvelous life bringing happiness to you and to himself - that is perhaps as much as we can ask. Your sadness today reflects the joys you shared.
    Take care
