Pangaea and Mini BAR

Did you see Arty's Special Blogville Announcement this week that he and Dory, along with Murphy and Stanley, are organising a Mini BAR retreat in Oregon this August?

I wasn't able to go to the BAR (Blogville Awesome Retreat) in Indiana last year, 'cos I live on the wrong side of the Pond.

The idea behind a Mini BAR is that small groups of Blogville citizens can organise local meet ups, to make the travelling easier.

Of course, to your geologically minded Bouncing Boffin, alternative solutions sprang to mind.

Oh but what a shame it is that we are not living around 270 million years ago, when all the continents - yes, even Australia - coalesced into one huge land mass called Pangaea and one could have travelled by automobile or railway train (had those forms of transport then been invented) from Scotland to Sydney via Seattle without once having one to dip one's paws in the briny or, horror of horrors, board an airplane.

It is of course perfectly possible that, at some point in the next few hundred million years, the world's tectonic plates might realign themselves such that our continents all come together again. (Just think how many walls Mr Trump would then have to build...)

However, the truth of the matter is, at least as far as Europe and North America are concerned, the direction of travel is not just now in our favour, with Iceland pulling itself apart at a rate of centimeters per year for the foreseeable future.

Hmmm.

Reluctantly I have to conclude that the prospect of seeing my dear non-European friends in the furs is remote indeed.

Anyone for a Mini BAR in Scotland?

We can guarantee a warm welcome at Aberdeen railway station.
Slight delay in setting off for Nottingham this morning...

  7. Bertie - Not every day you see Pangea mentioned in a dog blog. You could of course have dipped your paw in the Geosynclinal Sea of Tethys. Good to see the staff at Aberdeen Station are their usual warm smiling selves.

  8. Aww Berie: We are reminded by the final photo in today's blog of the enormous mistake your tourism bureau made in not choosing you as the official ambassador.

But like all true great dogs, you continue doing the job without the recognition or praise.

  9. We would LOVES to go to Scotland, but Momma says that the UK has all sorts of restrictions on doggies because we have rabies in our country and you don't. :( If it makes you feel any better, the US is so big that the miniBAR is a REALLY long way for us to.

  11. I must say, Scotland has its fair share of walls. Or stone fences, whatever you call them. And the have been up for ages. I remember stopping by a visitor center and asking about the stone fences/walls with pointy stones on stop that ran through the country side. I was met with blank stares and shrugged shoulders. After showing the visitor guides some photos, they said the drove past them everyday and had no idea why they were built that way or who built them. They never even noticed them. The Romans were a right dab hand at constructing walls in Britain too. You could drive around on top of that one. Let he that hath no wall chuck stones first. Perhaps a book on the history of walls/tall stone fences in Scotland would be a good read on your return trip.

We have our own walled in back garden, not to keep others out, but to keep us in.

  13. We would love a MiniBAR in Scotland!! We are afraid only our Mini Me's would be able to attend tho!! We sure wish they would come up with some pet friendly ways to travel between continents...WE KNOW, you should get started building a transporter like they have in Star Trek, Bertie. You are such a smart guy, we bet you could have it figured out before the humans can!!

We look forward to volunteering Arty to be the first to try it... ;-)

  14. Hello again Bertie, it's me, Inca - the first post we made didn't make sense, the computer gobbled up the words. I'll say again what a brilliant idea that is to have a MiniBar in Scotland. If all the continents were joined together, even just for a week or two, then everyone could come ! What fun it would be to meet up with all those lovely doggies, peeps, and pussy cats.
I've got my passport ready - in case the peeps decide to go somewhere exciting and take me with them !

    Love,
    Inca xx

    2. I will Bertie ! There's talk about France, which is where the peeps usually take all their doggies on holiday, though I haven't been yet.
