Overconfidence - a trait shared with HGD?

You know how I told you a few days ago that I was sure I had won the agility competition, and found it hard to understand why the judges decided otherwise?

Well Gail is saying that my problem is "over-confidence".

What's more, she claims that this trait has been evident from the start. For example when I was a wee pup I would go up to big and aggressive looking dogs and bounce all over them, confident that they would want to be my friends, even when their body language indicated just the opposite.

So I was thrilled to learn that Human Grandad has also long been seen as over-confident. Recently, when Gail was trying to dissuade him from attempting to walk further than his aged muscles would permit, he replied, in a rare moment of verbal fluency, by telling her how, when he was training to be an RAF pilot in Oklahoma, his flying instructor would tick him off for failing to recognise the limits of his ability and for attempting manoeuvres that were unwise and even dangerous.

I am so proud and happy to have HGD as a role model!

Or should that be roll model?

  4. You stick with HGD. Confidence is not a bad thing. Go for it, am I right?

P.S. my HGD also seems to have a bit of that trait. Momma is always sending him weather alerts on hot or cold days telling him to refrain from his daily walk. Sometimes he listens. Sometimes not. Lets just say the ambulance drivers in his town know him very well.

  5. We say "bird of a feather flock together." You learned your over confidence from a very FINE man Bertie!

Give HGD a big hug and kiss from us.

  6. Bertie, you are a Terrier. Of course you will be confident. With such a good role model, your HGD, we understand there just maybe a little over confidence creeping in on the odd occasion.
Better than being a shrinking Violet.

Wow, I agree that this is a great trait to have! This is how all overachievers do their overachieving, after all. I bet your HGD's a really pawesome peep.

  11. Who knew there was a book about the RAF in OK?! Will have to try and find a copy. Our HGD was born in OK and was a USAAF pilot during WWII, but they sent him to Texas to train instead of OK. Might have been the type of plane he was trained to pilot? Or just a matter of where there were spaces at the time. Anyhow, we figure over-confidence - and competence and planning - won us the war. Well, that and an industrial base that was not being bombed :) You and HGD keep flying high!

    1. I have a copy of the book because the journalist who wrote it contacted Dad and he supplied a couple stories and photos (including one of him looking heartbreakingly young and innocent in his new RAF uniform), but I think it is now out of print. Anyone reading the book would gain the impression that wartime OK was paradise on earth!
      Cheers, Gail.

  12. Bertie - If you go down Union Street on a pre-Christmas Saturday you'll need to be doing all sorts of sudden manouevres.
